“No, no, no!” Christina Carbajal insisted after her husband tried to tell her they had just won three-quarters of a million dollars on a California Lottery Mystery Crossword Scratchers® ticket. “I didn’t believe him,” Carbajal said, before going on to explain her reasoning.
The ticket was purchased at Firebird Liquors, which is located at 810 North Glendora Avenue in Covina (Los Angeles County). Carbajal knew it had some sort of win. Her husband then took the ticket back to the store for verification and even returned with a winner claim form. Still, Christina was clinging to her doubt.
“The things my husband goes through to pull a prank,” Christina said. Yup, it appears her hubby has a history of trying to pull a number on her. “Oh my gosh! He likes to scare me,” Christina added. Like the time they were watching a horror movie late at night and he secretly sent their teenaged son outside to ring the doorbell.
Suspicious of yet another trick, Christina even found herself withholding her excitement while delivering the ticket to the Lottery’s Santa Fe Springs District Office. “Can you tell me how much this is?” the 47-year old timidly asked the clerk. “I’m at the window and I’m telling her, I don’t believe this!”
The lucky winner said the money will be a serious help…including paying off bills and her daughter’s student loans. By now, reality has to finally be settling in, right? “Not yet,” Christina joked, “until I see the money in my bank account.”
