One of California’s newest millionaires has stepped forward to claim her prize. Debra Miller won $1.6 million playing Powerball back on April 13.
Miller said the day she bought her ticket was a normal day. She had about $6 in cash on her so she decided to buy some lottery tickets, including a Powerball ticket. That ticket ended up matching five of six numbers to win $1,623,182! So, how did she react when she found out the good news?
“I was frozen,” Miller said. A short time later she called her husband, but he didn’t believe her. He thought she was getting back at him for an April Fools’ joke he pulled on their son a few days earlier. Once he came around, the two started to think about what they’re going to do with the money. First, they want to help their son with his education. Then, they’ll plan for retirement.
“A week ago, I thought I was going to work until I died,” Miller said. “Now I can actually see that somewhere five years down the road I will be able to retire.”
